Thin soil over limestone
Much of the land around the lake has only a shallow layer of soil over Glen Rose limestone, the rock of the Trinity Aquifer that supplies many wells here. A conventional drain field needs depth of soil to treat wastewater, and here there often isn鈥檛 much. That鈥檚 why many systems around the lake are aerobic units with spray heads, or other designs that treat the water before it reaches the ground.
Weekend homes and full-time homes
Lake houses that sit empty for weeks and then fill up for a holiday weekend put an uneven load on a septic system. Aerobic units need their air and power to keep the bacteria alive, and every system needs pumping on a schedule. A tank that was fine for two people can overflow when a full house arrives.
Who permits septic here
Canyon Lake is in Comal County, and the Comal County Engineer鈥檚 Office, Environmental Health, in New Braunfels issues septic permits. Its application also asks about the floodplain and whether any part of the lot is in a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flowage easement around the lake, so check before planning a new system or a repair that moves anything.
Canyon Lake questions
Asked around Canyon Lake.
Why do so many Canyon Lake homes have aerobic septic systems?
Because the soil is often too thin over limestone for a conventional drain field. An aerobic unit treats the wastewater with air and bacteria first, and the cleaner water is then sprayed or dripped over a larger area. The permit and site evaluation decide what each lot gets.
How often should a Canyon Lake weekend home be pumped?
It depends on tank size and how many people use the house, not on how many days it鈥檚 used. TCEQ鈥檚 general guidance for conventional tanks is every three to five years; a house that fills up for long weekends and holidays may need it sooner. Aerobic tanks are pumped when the sludge is deep enough.
My aerobic alarm is going off at the lake house. What should I do?
Cut water use and call. Don鈥檛 open the control panel or work on the wiring, and never lean into an open tank. The alarm often means a high water level, a failed pump or an air problem, and each needs a different fix.

I was extremely pleased with the customer service and the work provided by Shawn. Shawn and his wife were very pleasant and friendly! I only asked for a septic tank pump out. Shawn came out and not only pumped out my tank but also inspected it for any cracks. They are definitely my go to now for any septic issues! I highly recommend Christian Septic Pumping!!!
