Marion and New Berlin are farm towns on the Blackland Prairie east of Schertz, where homes sit on acreage and septic systems are the norm.

Deep black clay

Much of this ground is clay of the Houston Black kind, the Texas state soil: deep, dark clay that swells when it鈥檚 wet and cracks open in a dry summer. It holds water instead of passing it, so drain fields need plenty of area, and after a wet spell a field can struggle. Many newer homes here have aerobic systems that spray treated water instead of relying on the clay to absorb it.

Cracks, roots and shifting lines

Clay that shrinks and swells can move pipes over time, and dry-season cracks invite roots toward tanks and lines. When drains slow down out here, the cause is as often a line or the effluent filter as a full tank.

Who permits septic here

Marion and New Berlin are in Guadalupe County, so Guadalupe County Environmental Health in Seguin is the permitting office. It requires a permit to build, alter, repair or extend a septic system.

Marion questions

Asked around Marion.

Do you serve Marion and New Berlin?

Yes. Both are on the company鈥檚 list of service towns on Google, along with Schertz, Seguin and Geronimo.

Is blackland clay bad for a septic system?

It鈥檚 challenging, not impossible. Clay drains slowly, so conventional fields need more area and good design, and aerobic systems are common. Keeping the tank pumped keeps solids from sealing the field and making the clay鈥檚 job harder.

Why do my drains slow down every summer?

Dry clay shrinks and cracks, which can shift lines and draw roots toward pipes and tanks. A clogged effluent filter is another common cause. Both are quick to check during a pump-out.
