River bottom and blackland

The Guadalupe River runs through Seguin, and the soil changes with distance from it. Near the river, the ground is floodplain loam; the USDA鈥檚 Seguin soil series takes its name from a site on the Guadalupe floodplain here. North of town, toward Geronimo and Marion, it becomes Blackland Prairie clay that swells when it鈥檚 wet, cracks when it鈥檚 dry, and lets water through slowly. Slow clay is hard on a drain field, which is why aerobic spray systems are common on newer homes.

Who permits septic here

Guadalupe County Environmental Health, at 310 IH 10 West in Seguin, is the permitting office for septic systems in the county. Its rules say no one may build, alter, repair, extend or operate a septic system without its permit, and that the site and soil evaluation is done by a registered sanitarian, site evaluator or professional engineer. If you鈥檙e reconnecting a home to an existing system, the county asks for the original permit first.

Geronimo and the farm roads

Geronimo, north of Seguin on Highway 123, is on the company鈥檚 list of service towns. Homes out here sit on acreage with long runs between house, tank and field, and many tanks have never had risers. A clogged effluent filter or a tank that hasn鈥檛 been pumped in years is the usual call.

Asked around Seguin.

Who issues septic permits in Seguin and Guadalupe County?

Does the Edwards Aquifer rule apply in Seguin?

No. The TCEQ鈥檚 Edwards Aquifer rules apply in eight counties: Bexar, Comal, Hays, Kinney, Medina, Travis, Uvalde and Williamson. Guadalupe County isn鈥檛 one of them, though the county still has its own septic rules.

Why does my drain field stay soggy after rain in the clay north of Seguin?

Blackland clay takes water slowly once it鈥檚 wet, so a field that copes in dry weather can struggle after rain. Cutting water use for a few days helps. If the ground stays wet over the field or drains slow down, call: the tank may be full or the filter clogged.
