Three counties, three permit offices
Schertz reaches into Guadalupe, Bexar and Comal counties. Most of the city is on sewer, so septic work here is on the acreage lots and older rural tracts at the edges. Septic permits follow the county: Guadalupe County Environmental Health in Seguin for the Guadalupe side, Bexar County for the Bexar side, and Comal County鈥檚 environmental health office, which lists an interlocal agreement with the City of Schertz, for the Comal side. If you鈥檙e not sure which applies, your tax statement shows the county.
Clay on one side, rock on the other
On the Guadalupe County side the ground is Blackland Prairie clay: deep, dark and slow to drain. Toward Garden Ridge and the Comal County line it turns thinner and rockier as the Hill Country begins. A drain field that works on one side of town may not work on the other, which is why the original permit and system layout are worth finding before any repair.
